Discuss
the varying definitions of resilience across various research studies
and note differences in conceptualization of the “bounce back” versus
“bounce forward” lenses. What are the common myths and narratives about
disaster recovery and what critical resilience piece do those
narratives miss? Using practical research from Japan discuss where
disaster resilience comes from and what are the differences in social
capital ties during response versus during recovery (with relevant
examples). When discussing adaptive capabilities, Ross noted that some
vulnerabilities were “immutable” – in your view, what adaptive
capabilities (both individual and collective) can mitigate some of the
inherent, immutable, vulnerabilities and how? What have recent studies
on collective adaptive capacities shown us specifically and what are the
most common themes to them all? Which theoretical models of adaptive
processes resonate with you the most and why?
