In November 1860, the Rev. Benjamin Palmer gave a sermon in which he described the political crisis of the current moment. He also made several suggestions for how the South (and a state like Louisiana) ought to respond to that crisis. For this week’s reflection, you should answer the following questions in no more than 500 words:
1. What is the political crisis that Palmer is describing — be specific.
2. What does he suggest the South’s duty is in the face of that crisis? Provide at least two direct quotes* from the sermon that illustrate your answer
3. What is Palmer’s stance on the protection of slavery and its expansion? Provide at least two direct quotes* from the sermon that illustrate your answer.
4. What does Palmer’s sermon suggest about the causes of secession which, almost immediately thereafter, led to the Civil War? You can talk about this in your own words and by way of conclusion
*NOTE — any material taken directly from the sermon should be placed in quotation marks. You do not need to cite your quotes or give a page number. You simply need to put those quotes in quotation marks. Since we are all drawing on the exact same source, no other citation is needed.
