Find a political debate either on video or described in print and decide if the debate constituted a dialogue (Chapter 4). Using excerpts and examples from the debate, identify examples of attitudes present or not present for open dialogue and address the presence or absence of dialogic behaviors in the debate participants. Some questions to consider:
What is dialogic communication? What attitudes are necessary for true dialogue?
Can you identify dialogic behaviors exhibited by either candidate that contributed to a successful debate? Or did you find defensive behaviors that may have diminished the ability for a dialogue in the debate?
What are your thoughts about the nature of political debates and the ability to have open dialogues in our society?
