Part one
Ethical dilemmas occur within every
workplace environment. In a three-page, double-spaced paper, using at
least two sources, choose 4 ethical dilemmas from below and do the following: Discuss
how to resolve each of your 4 chosen ethical dilemmas by using research and/or
the National Organization of Human Services Code of Ethics to discuss the Human
Service Professional’s ethical resolution process. Discuss the potential short-
and long-term consequences that could occur if each ethical dilemma is not
resolved appropriately. Feel free to provide hypothetical examples to explain
what could occur if each ethical dilemma is not resolved adequately.
Dilemma #1: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, a
client makes sexual advances towards you, and you begin to feel uncomfortable. Dilemma
#2: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, a client shows you an
inappropriate picture on social media, to which one of your co-workers
responded to the posting. Dilemma #3: While working at Rasmussen Help Center,
LLC, you observe a client exchanging money from his hand to another Human
Services Professional. Dilemma #4: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC,
a client of the agency asks you if her ex-boyfriend was a client on your
caseload.
Part Two
Today you have been asked to work intake for potentially new
clients that will be receiving services with Rasmussen Help Center, LLC. It is
currently 4:55 pm, and because the center is closing in 5 minutes, you begin to
gather the intake paperwork. You did not notice Calvin, who was walking out of
the bathroom, and he says to you, “I need help. I’m homeless, hungry, and I
can’t do another day on the street. Can you help me?” As you are listening to Calvin, you smell
alcohol on his breath and the stench of marijuana on his clothing. Calvin
informs you that he is a homeless veteran and abruptly states, “If I have to
live on the streets again tonight, I might as well end it.” It is now 4:59 pm.
You have a paper due at midnight that you have not yet begun, and you are
hoping to get some library time in before the public library closes at 7:00 pm.
In a two-page, double-spaced paper, using at least one source, address
the following:
What are the ethical dilemmas presented within this
hypothetical scenario? Based upon the Ethical Standards for Human Services
Professionals established by the National Organization of Human Services, what
should you do? What skills are necessary when working with Calvin and what
steps would you take in assisting Calvin?
Part three
“Stephanie” has been a client with Rasmussen Help Center,
LLC for six months and she has been assigned to your caseload. You are the
third Human Services Professional that she will be working with. Her transition
between Human Services Professionals is because she has been minimally
compliant with receiving assistance and the agency is trying to work with her
because she is mandated to participate in social services as a part of the
conditions for her parole. Stephanie walks into your office and says, “Well, I
guess you have heard about me. You seem to be okay but let me tell you what I
will and will not do.” You have reviewed the notes in her file and the
notations you have made are as such:
Client has a history of substance abuse (marijuana);
however, has tested negative for the last 6 months, but feels the urge to use
again due to living with a brother that is a chronic marijuana abuser. Due to
disruptive behavior in group counseling (Anger Management Group) two weeks ago,
her parole officer was contacted and stated that if she disrupts another group,
she will face parole revocation for not working on her anger. Client has a
history of being physically and sexually abused as a child and was a victim of
domestic violence. Client has 4 children—all of whom are in foster care. She
has court-ordered conditions that she must meet to have the children
transitioned back into the home.
Client’s living situation is unstable. Client suffers from
PTSD and chronic depression and does not attend mental health services
frequently and refuses to take prescribed medication for anxiety and depression.
Stephanie’s transition to your caseload is her last chance. As an ethical and
creative Human Services Professional, write a 3-page double-spaced
paper, using at least two sources, in which you do the following: Based on the
notes that you have made, develop strategies that will assist her in addressing
the stressors in her life and her maladaptive behaviors.
Discuss how the role of supervision can assist in working
Stephanie. (Think about the role of your supervisor. How does the supervisor’s
role support you, as a Human Services Professional, in working with Stephanie
and applying evidence-based practice to your work?)
Part four
The main theories of human behavior are systems theory,
behaviorism/social learning theory, psychodynamic theory, psychosocial
development theory, transpersonal theory, social exchange theory, social
constructivism, symbolic interactionism, conflict theory, and contingency
theory. For this written assignment, in a three-page, double-spaced
paper, using a minimum of two sources, choose three theories of human behavior
to explain the negative thought patterns, actions, and/or behaviors that
clients may exhibit.
For example, if you were to (a) choose systems theory, (b)
behaviorism/social learning theory, and (c) conflict theory, you should
describe how each of these theories might generally explain clients’ negative
actions/behaviors, thoughts, and perceptions that may contribute to client
problems. The goal of this assignment is to discuss, regarding human behavior
theory, which potentially brings clients to the Human Services Professional for
intervention services.
Part five
Yesterday, the Executive Director of Rasmussen Help Center,
LLC notified your supervisor that a former client would need emergent services.
However, because your supervisor is on sick leave, you did not receive the
message. “Calvin,” from the Module 03 Written Assignment, is back and has
walked through the doors of Rasmussen Help Center, LLC as soon as the clock
struck 8:00 am.
He is returning to the agency after a two-week stint in the
local county jail. As you are seated at your desk, filing confidential client
information, Calvin walks in and says, “Just the person I am looking for. Good
morning, how are you?”
Calvin appears disheveled and you see that you will need to
spend some time to develop a case plan of action for Calvin. Based on the
information that you gathered previously, Calvin needs a) stable housing. He
has no place to live after the last day of this month due to his brother
relocating to another state. b) medical care for diabetes and follow-up care
for oncological services after battling and surviving cancer two years ago. c)
Psychiatric care due to Calvin indicating a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder and
a prescription for this disorder. d) Food assistance because he does not have
adequate funds to eat nutritiously, if at all, in any a given day.
Though you are ethical in all facets of your work as a Human
Services Professional, you want to show your supervisor your continuous
initiative in helping the diverse clients of the agency. In a five-page,
double-spaced paper, using a minimum of three resources, you will develop a
draft for Calvin’s plan of action. In this paper, address the following:
Provide an overview of Calvin’s overall presentation, based
upon what you notice about him in your interactions with him, as the Human
Services Professional working with him. Does he appear to be willing to
participate in services? Why or why not? Is he able to do so? Why or why not?
What evidence do you have of his willingness and/or potential non-compliance in
some or all potential areas where intervention is necessary?
Based on the information that has been gathered relative to
Calvin’s needs, develop a goal for each area of concern that has been noted and
why each goal has been established.
Because Rasmussen Help Center, LLC is an agency in your
local community where you work, identify providers within your community that
can assist Calvin with each of the areas in which he needs assistance. Include
a synopsis of each provider and how these providers can specifically assist
Calvin in supporting him progressively towards self-sufficiency.
Discuss how you would engage Calvin towards feeling
empowered and resilient so that he is ultimately successful in achieving a
better way of life. How should the Human Services Professional engage Calvin
towards feeling competent and able to be successful so that he can become
independent?
Cultural sensitivity is a skill that is necessary for all
Human Services Professionals. What is your specific plan towards ensuring that
you are culturally sensitive when working with Calvin? How can you encourage
cultural diversity with colleagues (noting, that a team effort may be necessary
when working with clients with complex needs) and why is it important to
utilize culturally based strategies when Human Services Professionals interact
with diverse client populations? Why is this important for ensuring that Human
Services Professionals develop a rapport with clients?
Part six
The work that is done by Human Services Professionals allows
us to practice, based upon the application of theory and through being
respectfully creative when working with the individualized needs of
individuals, families, groups, and communities. The goal of the work done by
Human Services Professionals is to encourage our clients to work towards being
self-sufficient so that they can independently address their own needs. For the
Module 05 Written Assignment, choose two client populations of interest. Think
of the difficulties and challenges that may be faced by both groups. In a two-page
paper, using at least two sources, discuss the following:
What are the specific difficulties and challenges faced by
both groups? How are they similar? How do they differ? What is the role of the
Human Services Professional in assisting both client populations to become
independent? Based on research, what skills are necessary to ensure that both
client groups progressively reach a level of self-sufficiency? With the two
groups that you have identified, how can the “road towards self-sufficiency” be
similar and how can it be different, based on individual and experiential
circumstances?
Part seven
In a minimum of 1 full-page, using Microsoft Word,
write an essay (full introduction and conclusion), which includes the
following: Describe the knowledge, skills and/or attitudes regarding each of the
transferable skills that you’ve gained because of completing this project/assignment.
Discuss the ways that you are going to incorporate the transferable skills (the
transferable skills that you showcased in your exemplary project) into your
work within your chosen career field. Describe your future goals based on the
transferable skills that you’ve chosen to showcase.
